The King With Six Friends
Finding himself without a kingdom, King Zar goes into the world to improve his fortunes and finds six friends whose special skills help him to get what he wants most. Through a series of magical encounters, dangerous trials, and assistance from a beautiful princess, Zar learns the power of friendship and how to become a true leader.
Based on “The King with Six Friends,” by Jay Williams, author of the “Danny Dunn” series of Young Adult novels.
PRODUCTION NOTES:
A lot of the more obvious transformations and creatures that are mentioned or shown in the script (elephants, trees, eagles, etc) can be done with a combination of puppetry, shadow-work, lighting and forced perspective. Great battles, heroic deeds and works of magic can be represented by utilizing these elements, either separated from or in conjunction with the actors onstage, depending on circumstances.
Rear projection can also be a great asset in creating the various environments depicted in a mostly-outdoors story if possible. However, creative lighting and scenic design choices can accomplish many of the same effects.
While this is King Zar’s story, much of the action takes place around him with his companions and others acting under his guidance and inspiration (especially during the Trials in Act II). At no time should he fade into the background, but it should be obvious his presence is always there, guiding and inspiring.
Music should always be present, as a mood enhancer (traveling throughout Act I) and to heighten tension in Act II. Standard Celtic/medieval music can be used, but it is encouraged to come up with unique original music to enhance the setting and the leadership of King Zar.
The dramatic rights to the original story by Jay Williams for production have been secured from the rights holder.
